Okay, so most of my flist is flailing about Dreamwidth? I'll admit I don't get it. From what I can tell it's basically another LJ (under a different name)? Maybe I'm wrong. Either way I don't get the excitement. Are people gonna be leaving LJ? Or is it just for talking about a specific subject matter?

HALP, I IZ CONFUZZED.

Huh. Seeing as how I got linked from here (don't know who by!), I'd like to offer myself up for any questions you might have. I'm involved with the project, but I'm not trying to huckster anybody into it, so I'll give you honest answers about whether on not it's worth it for you to be interested in Dreamwidth, based on what you say.

I also find the INVITES NOW a bit confusing, as we're still putting the last finishing paint touches up, and that really, it is okay to wait until April 30th when the site goes into open beta.

I think it's mostly because in the past couple of days, literally half of my friendslist have gotten dw accounts, and it all seems so shiny. So the ones who don't have invite codes are feeling left out of the fun (as opposed to a couple of weeks ago, when only two of my friends were on dw and it was very closed beta-like).

But I will patiently wait until April 30. :)

Bwah! Dreamwidth is an online journal service like LJ, but it's created by people who don't just consider it to be a business, and who have every intention of protecting fandom, as far as I know. I'm pretty sure it started after that whole debacle a couple of years ago when people were getting suspended and having their entire journals deleted for writing chan fic. LJ has been screwing their customers over for a while, from what I've heard.

Um. But I am not as educated about it as I should be! That's just what I've managed to pick up over the last year. :)

Ah okay. Can't say I understand the excitement for it still though. Maybe it's because I don't pay enough attention to the in's and out's of LJ, lol.

I think it goes back about one or two years, the big strikethrough debacle. The HP fandom was severely hit (considering you've got underage/bestiality and some other weird stuff in it). Stuff got deleted for no real reason. A lot of non-fandom things too if I remember correctly. Communities about serious issues like suicide and self-harm/cutting also I believe.

Mostly fandom took a massive hit, and suddenly people started to realize that LJ put limitations on how freely you could express yourself in your own journal...

As far as I know, Dreamwidth will be open to anything fandom will throw at it, as long as it's within US law (I believe the servers are in the US). The law however is fairly vague on such issues though (at least I remember it being back then, from what people who knew were posting)

Some of this may be off, it's late and I have a fever and should really be sleeping.
